Melissa Benoist Is Holding Out Hope for Supergirl Return

Actress Melissa Benoist, best known for her role as Kara Danvers / Supergirl within the Arrowverse, teases her comeback as the Woman of Tomorrow.

“I’ve been developing a Supergirl concept for some time now. Initially, I had a different actress in mind for the role,” the artist noted. “However, it was recently announced that several actresses are being considered for the new Supergirl in the DCU, including Milly Alcock. Given her outstanding performance in House of the Dragon, choosing her for this concept was an easy decision. I sincerely hope she lands the role and gets the chance to showcase her full potential.”

Are the Rumors of Milly Alcock’s Potential Casting True?

According to a report by Deadline, Alcock was in the running for the Supergirl role in the DCU alongside Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly. Also reported was that James Gunn was personally involved with the casting process, as the character is expected to first appear in the DCU, possibly in Superman: Legacy, before getting her own solo film. Gunn often debunks DCU rumors on social media, though he curiously stayed silent on the Supergirl rumors. However, he did post a vague message on his Threads account that might have insinuated that some parts of the report were accurate, while others were not.

The Most Important DCU Character Isn’t the One Fans Think

Superman and Batman both have big projects coming for the DCU. But the most important one belongs to a heroine still waiting for a big-screen hit.

“It’s difficult to debunk stories that are fake but with some element of truth,” Gunn posted shortly after the Supergirl report was published. “Either I have to point out what’s fake and what’s true, and give away a bunch of stuff I didn’t want to, or I just say the whole thing is fake and get accused of dishonesty down the line when the one true part comes out. Anyway, there’s a couple of those stories around recently.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is one of several projects that has been announced for the DCU, but it’s not expected to arrive in the near future. The DCU will officially kick off in late 2024 with the TV series Creature Commandos, and the first film of the new DC timeline will be the 2025 release of Superman: Legacy. Not much is known about the project at this time, but it was previously reported that Ana Nogueira will write the script.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not have a set release date, but Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
