David Corenswet’s Clark Kent takes center-stage in new DC Comics-inspired fan art ahead of the release of Superman, the first feature film in the rebooted DC Universe. James Gunn announced the development of Superman – then named Superman: Legacy – in January 2023, shortly after his and Peter Safran’s hiring as co-CEOs of DC Studios. Superman will kick off the new DCU in July 2025, while 2024’s Creature Commandos will provide a taste of what’s to come. Hollywood’s David Corenswet is taking over from Henry Cavill as Clark Kent’s Superman, and production is well underway on his first DCU project.

David Corenswet was cast as Superman in June 2023, being announced alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s casting as Lois Lane. Since then, many other actors have joined Superman’s upcoming cast, but Corenswet’s Man of Steel will undoubtedly be the focus of the DCU feature film. Vibrant comic-inspired fan art shared by Butcher Billy imagines David Corenswet as a classic DC Comics version of Superman.

The art depicts Superman breaking free from chains in a costume fit with Superman’s official DCU logo, borrowing from some of the Man of Steel’s most powerful stories, and some that James Gunn himself has taken inspiration from.

Superman: Legacy Could Already Be Setting Up The Justice League’s DCU Replacement

Filming locations for Superman: Legacy have been revealed, and one could hint at the DCU’s Justice League replacement debuting earlier than thought.

Which DC Comics Have Inspired James Gunn’s Superman?

During his initial announcement of the rebooted DCU, James Gunn revealed that his new Superman reboot would take direct inspiration from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman, a 12-issue storyline that ran between 2005 and 2008. All-Star Superman saw the titular Man of Steel accomplish huge heroic feats while facing death due to overexposure to the Earth’s sun. During an exchange on Threads in March 2024, James Gunn revealed even more DC Comics inspiration for the upcoming Superman reboot, including one image from All-Star Superman of Superman saving a young person, and uncovering more details about the highly-anticipated project.

James Gunn shared images from 2003’s Superman: Birthright, 2008’s Brainiac, 2002’s Superman: Ending Battle, 1996’s Kingdom Come, 1998’s Superman for All Seasons and 1986’s Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?. These story inspirations for 2025’s Superman hint at David Corenswet’s Man of Steel facing realistic, down-to-Earth threats, joining forces with Krypto, his Kryptonian canine, focusing on Clark Kent’s small town upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, and teaming up with several other iconic superheroes. The DCU’s Superman will also focus on the romance between Clark Kent and Lois Lane, with this acting as the backbone of Clark Kent’s esteemed superhero career.
