Christian Bale is not often in the business of losing money when it comes to the usual blockbuster films that he is a part of. However, the new David O. Russell Amsterdam feature in which Bale is a star is set to lose $100 million, which is massive considering the intense star power that is included in this movie. Russell is also a famed director that has seen his other ensemble movies be highly successful, the last being American Hustle, which pulled in $251 million against a budget of $40 million.

However, with Christian Bale joining another ensemble cast that includes Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Taylor Swift, and so many more, the movie just has not hit the ground running in the way it was projected to. The issues from Amsterdam now being projected as a box office flop had a lot to do with Covid restrictions and the production having to move from Boston to Los Angeles in 2021. The movie had stopped shooting in 2020, when the shutdowns occurred, only to resume production in June of 2021, but that led to plenty of the star power being weary about traveling to the east coast when Covid was still plenty rampant.

The production moving locations and the hiccups caused by the Covid restrictions led the production budget to skyrocket from $50 million to $80 million. Despite the movie having a poor opening weekend, it could just mean that it might be slow going. However, another massive hit to the success of this movie could be critics destroying it, as the Christian Bale-led Amsterdam currently holds a meager 33% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This slow-moving progress of Amsterdam has been compared to Wes Anderson movies, which also have more of a niche fitting when it comes to audiences watching his work. For instance, The Life Aquatic has a massive ensemble cast that led to a $50 million budget but would only net $35 million worldwide. However, this would become one of Anderson’s more popular movies, which could happen to this Christian Bale-led Amsterdam feature at some point.

Christian Bale might not have that many worries about Amsterdam failing at the box office so far, as he was just the villain in Thor: Love and Thunder, which pulled in $760 million worldwide. Those are the usual numbers for the movies that Bale is a part of, though it is a bit sad that David O. Russell’s newest venture is not a hit with audiences.

Just because Amsterdam failed to have a big opening that would project it to have much better monetary success down the line, there is no reason to panic just yet. Again, it could just be that people have not yet heard about this Christian Bale-led feature, and the people could return to theaters to watch it in the coming weeks. However, this could also just be the rare time in which Bale and the rest of the cast are involved in a movie that just simply flopped.
