Anthony Bourdain-Penned Graphic Novels to Be Adult Swim Show ‘Get Jiro!’
Adult Swim is cooking up two new series, one of which adapts the late Anthony Bourdain‘s graphic novels.
Ahead of Warner Bros. Discovery’s adult animation showcase being held Friday at the Annecy Animation Festival, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal that Get Jiro! has received a series order from Adult Swim. The animated half-hour project is based on the New York Times best-selling DC/Vertigo graphic novels written by famed chef and TV personality Bourdain and Joel Rose, with accompanying artwork from Langdon Foss and Alé Garza.
Set in the near future, the show centers on a mysterious, revenge-focused sushi chef named Jiro in a version of Los Angeles where customers resort to murder to secure a table at coveted restaurants. Get Jiro! is created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who co-wrote last year’s A24 feature Sharper which starred Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, and they were producers on NBC’s comedy series Superstore. Bourdain and Rose’s first graphic novel in the franchise was published in 2012.
Also going to series at Adult Swim is Super Mutant Magic Academy from creators J.G. Quintel (Emmy-winning creator of Cartoon Network’s Regular Show) and Jillian Tamaki. The surreal comedy show focuses on Marsha, a sarcastic transfer student with a mysterious past who ends up at a high school that includes mutants and human students attempting to navigate friendships, relationships and their burgeoning powers.
Super Mutant Magic Academy is based on Tamaki’s comic series and hails from Cartoon Network Studios.
Additionally, My Adventures With Superman has landed a third season at Adult Swim. Currently airing its second season, the serialized project is based on DC characters and follows twentysomethings Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen on their journeys of self-discovery.
Jack Quaid voices Superman and Clark Kent, Alice Lee portrays Lois Lane and Ishmel Sahid brings to life Jimmy Olsen. The second season is set to include a major character reveal in Saturday’s episode, ahead of the ensuing drama for season three.
Streaming platform Max launched this week in Europe, allowing many Annecy attendees a greater chance to experience Adult Swim programming. The Annecy Animation Festival continues through Saturday in Annecy, France.
